The diarrhea is a result of the inflammation process occurring at the surface of the intestine.

Disorders Of The Colon: Causes Of IBS

August 21st, 2007

Nobody knows for sure what is the cause of causes the irritable bowel syndrome. The walls of the intestines are furnished with the layers of the muscle, which contract and slacken while they move the food to the rectum. When the intestines function correctly, these muscles will contract properly, however in irritable bowel syndrome, the contractions of the intestines are intense and last for a longer period of time. The food or waste that is present in the intestines will move through quickly, accompanied by gas, and a bloated feeling in the stomach and intestine. However, it is also possible for the reverse to occur. The food moves through the intestine slowly, and the feces will become hard and dry, leading to constipation.

It is the belief of some scientists that Irritable Bowel Syndrome may be the result of changes to the nervous system. These nervous system changes result in a decrease or increase in the contractions of the gastro-intestinal muscle. Someone with IBS will feel these nerve changes more than someone with a normally functioning system.
